Arts Students Show Higher SAT Scores by Newsletter of Young Audiences Students studying or participating in the performing or visual arts continue to outperform their non-arts high school peers on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), according to the College Entrance Examination Board. In 1993, students involved in acting or play production averaged 62 points higher on the math portion than students with no course work in the arts. Those taking music appreciation courses scored 54 points and 37 points higher on the verbal and math portions respectively. Young Audiences Awarded Arts Medal Young Audiences of San Diego was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Clinton in a ceremony at the White House on October 14, 1994. Yo-Yo Ma, the celebrated cellist and Young Audiences National Advisory Committee member, accepted the medal on behalf of Young Audiences of San Diego, its parent organization, Young Audiences, Inc., and the 31 other chapters in the network. President Clinton praised Young Audiences, the only organization of its kind ever to receive the award, for "coordinating with schools and communities to establish partnerships on behalf of arts education" and for "bringing the enrichment of performing arts to millions of young people all across our country. That is a terrific achievement," Clinton said. The National Medal of Arts is awarded annually to selected recipients for their "outstanding contributions to the nation's cultural life." Individuals honored this year included actor and singer Harry Belafonte, jazz musician and composer Dave Brubeck, contralto Celia Cruz, violin teacher Dorothy DeLay, actor Julie Harris, choreographer Erick Hawkins, dancer Gene Kelly, folk musician Pete Seeger, arts patron Catherine Filene Shouse, painter Wayne Thiebaud and poet Richard Wilbur.
