Health Freedom the Write Way!
Your rights to use and obtain dietary supplements are threatened.
The time has come when we must be active!
Senator Hatch (Rep.-Utah) and Congressman Richardson (Dem-New Mexico) have recently introduced legislation which will amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in a positive way. Senate Bill S. 784 and House Bill H.R. 1709, both titled the "Dietary Supplement, Health and Ed-ucation Act of 1993," will help prevent the overly restrictive government regulations that currently threaten your health care choices. These laws will preserve your right to have access to dietary supplements and to information about the benefits dietary supplements provide. Among other things these new laws will establish these key points:
- A broader definition of "dietary supple-ment," to include herbs and other supple-ments.
- Dietary supplements are NOT drugs.
- Dietary supplements are NOT food additives.
- Truthful/scientifically based health infor-mation about dietary supplements is permitted.
- The FDA has no prior restraint authority on truthful labeling or advertising.
If your rights to obtain and use dietary supplements are to be preserved, this legis-lation must be passed into law. This will happen only if you do the following:
- Telephone and/or write personal letters to your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor Senate Bill S. 784.
- Telephone and/or write personal letters to your Congressperson and ask him/her to co-sponsor House Bill H.R. 1709.
- Get as many of your friends and relatives as possible to do the same thing.
Please telephone and/or write to your Senators and Congresspersons immediately. Names, addresses and telephone numbers for the Congresspersons and Senators from your state are available at your local health food store, library, telephone book or the elections office of your county court. If you are not sure which voting district you are in, call the NNFA office at 1-800-966-6632.
TELEPHONE PROCEDURES
When making your telephone calls ask for:
- Your Senator or Congressperson directly.
- Your Senator's or Congressperson's staff director.
- Your Senator's or Congressperson's health policy staff member.
Once you have their attention, express your desire for them to co-sponsor the "Dietary Supplement, Health and Education Act of 1993," (S. 784 or H.R. 1709,) and work vigorously for its passage. To be most effective, please include the five key points listed in first paragraph.
SAMPLE LETTER
Re: "The Dietary Supplement, Health and Education Act of 1993," (S. 784 or H.R. 1709,)
Dear Senator or Representative:
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Bill Richardson (D-New Mexico) are sponsoring The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1993 (S.B. 784/H.R. 1709). I ask you to co-sponsor this bill and work vigorously for its passage. I want this bill enacted because it will preserve my right to have access to dietary supplements and to information about the benefits dietary supplements provide. As well as protect my natural health choices. I know your time is valuable, but please consider the key points of this bill:
- A broader definition of dietary supplements, to include herbs and other supplements.
- That dietary supplements are NOT drugs.
- That dietary supplements are NOT food additives.
- That truthful health information about dietary supplements is permitted.
- That the FDA has no prior restraint authority on truthful labeling or advertising.
Your action on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
