See You At The Poleby William B. Lindley
Pat Robertson has something strange going. In his effort to shoehorn his brand of Christianity into the public schools, he has been promoting group student prayer at the high school flagpole. There was a special nationwide event Sept. 15 doing just this. A photo of a previous event showed students making a circle around the pole, holding hands. The ceremony was to take place at 7 A.M. These features so closely mimic ancient phallic worship ceremonies that I wrote Bill Edelen a note on it. With much gusto, he devoted one of his columns to the topic, adding material from his treasure trove of knowledge of ancient and modern religions. Son of a gun! Not one paper would publish it, allegedly for fear of offending Pat Robertson. Pat has clout, but not that much. I think Bill is learning the hard way that the erect penis is America's Taboo Number One. Even when witches and/or Jungian archetypes beguile Pat into patterning his prayers after phallic worship, just pointing this out is too much for tender Americans. Hope Pat and his two million teenagers get much spiritual satisfaction worshipping you-know-what. Meanwhile, Bill Edelen and I will get on to other topics.
